There is no single answer to the question “how much does it cost to hire an excavator?”. The price depends mainly on two things: the size of the machine and the length of the rental. On top of the rent come further costs: VAT, transport, fuel and sometimes insurance. In this article you will find current prices, worked examples and a checklist, so that nothing takes you by surprise.

How the rent is calculated
- 1 to 19 days: the standard daily rate applies.
- 20 days or more: the daily rate is lower. For the two-tonne TB216 it is €60 instead of €80 a day.
- Month: for long-term rental, the monthly price from the price list applies.
The rent covers single-shift operation, up to 8 hours a day. If you need to work longer, this is only possible with written consent and at a higher rent. Let us know in advance, before you sign the contract.
The rent is paid in advance against an invoice, and it also applies to days when the machine is standing idle. So if it rains and you are not digging, the machine still counts. When you plan your dates, allow some margin, but not an unnecessarily large one.

Add transport (unless you collect the machine yourself) and fuel to these amounts. Every machine on our website has a calculator that works out the price for the number of days. We will confirm the exact price for your dates in our quote.
What else you pay on top of the rent
Deposit
When you rent a machine, you pay a security deposit from €600; for attachments (breaker, auger, drum cutter, shears) it is from €300. The deposit is refunded once the machine has been returned in good order.
Transport
Transport of the machine is not included in the rent. You have two options:
- Collect the machine yourself from the branch with your own trailer or lorry.
- We deliver it to your site on a lorry with a hydraulic crane. We will give you the transport price in our quote; it depends on the distance and the size of the machine.
If you want to transport the machine yourself on a trailer, see the section on driving licences below.
Fuel
Fuel is paid by the hirer. As a rule, you refuel the machine with diesel as needed during the rental. When you collect the machine, ask what fuel level it should be returned with.
Insurance
Under our terms and conditions, unless agreed otherwise in writing, the hirer must take out insurance against damage caused by operating the machine during the rental and show proof of it on request. If the hirer does not provide proof, the lessor may take out the insurance at the hirer’s expense. If you have liability insurance (for example, as a company), check with your insurer whether it also covers a rented machine. If it does not, ask us about a solution when you order.
Routine maintenance and cleaning
During the rental, routine maintenance is the hirer’s responsibility: a daily check of the machine before work, greasing and refuelling. Any need for a larger repair must be reported without undue delay. You may only carry out such a repair with our consent.
You return the machine in the same condition in which you received it. If it is dirty (mud in the tracks, concrete on the bucket), cleaning is charged according to the price list. It pays to remove heavy dirt while you are still on site.
VAT
All prices in the price list are excl. VAT; 23% is added on top. If your company is registered in another EU country, we will confirm how VAT applies in our quote.
Transporting it yourself: which driving licence you need
If you want to tow the smallest machine (for example the TB210R, weighing 1,150 kg) yourself on a trailer behind a car, what counts is the maximum authorised mass of the car and the trailer as stated in their registration documents, not the actual weight of the load:
| Licence | What you may tow |
|---|---|
| category B | a trailer up to 750 kg, or a heavier trailer if the combination does not exceed 3,500 kg in total |
| B with code 96 (B96) | a combination up to 4,250 kg |
| BE | a trailer up to 3,500 kg |
Also check that the trailer can carry the weight of the machine and that your car is allowed to tow a braked trailer of that weight (you will find this in the car’s registration document). Always secure the machine on the trailer with ratchet straps. Larger machines are better left to us to deliver.
Checklist before you rent
- Do you know which machine you need? Digging depth, access width, type of work. Our article Which mini excavator should you choose? will help.
- Have the underground utilities been marked out? Before digging, ask the utility operators (gas, electricity, water, telecoms) to mark out their networks. This can take several days.
- Who will operate the machine? Machines may only be operated by trained persons. Read the operating and maintenance instructions.
- Transport: will you collect the machine yourself, or do you want it delivered?
- Attachments: do you need a breaker, an auger or a screening bucket? Rent them together with the machine.
- Insurance: do you have liability insurance that also covers a rented machine?
- At handover: check the condition of the machine together with us and record it in the handover report. If something is not right, make sure it goes in the report. Hidden defects must be reported within 14 days at the latest.
How to save money on rental
- Choose the right size. A machine that is too small drags the job out; one that is too big may not fit onto the plot and costs more both per day and to transport.
- Prepare the site in advance. Utilities marked out, the digging area marked and a place ready for the spoil. That way the machine is not left waiting.
- Rent attachments at the same time. With a hydraulic breaker, an earth auger or a screening bucket to hand, you do not have to wait.
- For longer jobs, use the lower rate from 20 days or the monthly price.
- Return the machine clean. You save on cleaning charges.
